    Impact Report Design,
    Built Around the Story

Hooten Design is an editorial design studio that produces impact reports for nonprofits, foundations, and mission-driven brands. Work covers narrative strategy, data visualization, photography direction, print production, and an accessible digital edition. Most impact report projects run eight to fourteen weeks.

An impact report has a harder job than an annual report. It has to prove that the money did something. That means the numbers need to be understandable, the stories need to feel like real people, and the design has to hold both without turning into a brochure of stock photography and pie charts.

We treat impact reports as editorial. A clear throughline, a pace that carries a reader from page to page, typography that respects the content, and data visualization built to make one point per chart instead of dumping a spreadsheet on the page. That is the difference between a report that gets skimmed and one that gets forwarded.

We work with nonprofits, foundations, research institutes, and companies reporting on community or social programs. Past work includes the SETI Institute annual report, storytelling and reporting design for Team Fox, and the visual system behind the Mary Tyler Moore Vision Initiative.

    Narrative, Data,
    and Production

    Narrative Strategy

Theme, throughline, section structure, and pacing agreed before design begins, so the report argues something instead of listing activities.

    Data Visualization

Custom charts, infographics, and visualized program metrics and financials that a board member can absorb without a briefing.

    Art Direction & Photography

Photography commissioning and editing, illustration direction, and the visual consistency that makes program stories feel real.

    Print Design & Production

Full layout, paper and finishing recommendations, prepress, vendor coordination, and press checks we attend.

    Digital & Interactive Editions

Scroll-based web versions, interactive data, and an accessible PDF so the report keeps working after the print run ships.

    Brand Alignment

Reports designed inside your existing brand system, or used as the moment to evolve it.

    How an Impact ReportProject Runs

Five stages, scheduled backward from your board date or campaign moment.

    1. 01

      Narrative and scope

We settle the theme, section structure, page count, formats, and the hard deadline, usually a board meeting, gala, or grant cycle.

      DELIVERABLE: Narrative outline and scope

    2. 02

      Content and data intake

We gather program metrics, financials, beneficiary stories, quotes, and photography, then flag what still needs writing or shooting.

DELIVERABLE: Content inventory and gap list

    3. 03

      Art direction and design

Two editorial directions using real content, then full layout of the chosen direction with custom data visualization and photo editing.

      Review and approval

Two structured revision rounds with consolidated staff and board feedback, plus proofreading and a fact check against source documents.
